How to Choose a Kitchen Faucet

When it comes time to get a new kitchen faucet, there are many varieties to choose from. The type you pick comes down to how you want it to function.  Do you wash a lot of dishes in the kitchen sink or cook often?  Your lifestyle will determine the faucet that fits you best. Here are some tips to help you choose.

Types of Kitchen Faucets

There are many types of  faucets on the market. There are several features to take note of as well.  Here are some to consider as you search for the right fit for your home.

Pull-Out Faucets

These are perfect for folks who need a faucet with a lot of range.  The detachable head lets you get into hard-to-reach areas of the kitchen sink.  Depending on the model, it may also reach the pot on your stove you want to fill with water.  The downside is it can easily splash water where you don’t want it.

Pull-Down Faucets

This faucet has a gooseneck spout and is a popular kitchen faucet model.  It’s best for users who hand-wash a lot of dishes.  These faucets have a fixed head that pulls out in a downward position.  This type of faucet is designed to be used in a deep sink.  They don’t have a lot of motion.

One-Handle Faucets

These are often gooseneck faucets that have a single handle in the middle or on the side.  It must be moved from left to right to draw hot or cool water.  The lever is moved with a fingertip to adjust the water flow and temperature.  It might take a while to get used to this style.  This faucet is best for people who prefer doing things one-handed.

Two-Handle Faucets

This faucet has a center spout with handles for hot and cold water on the sides.  The one drawback is that busy cooks have to use two hands to adjust the water temperature.  This style is best for those who prefer precision temperature control.

Touchless Faucets

If you prefer a hands-free operation, a touchless faucet is a good choice.  Water comes out at just the wave of a hand.  This is great for when you just handled raw meat, for example. However, the water temperature must be manually adjusted.  This model is more expensive.

Smart Faucets

If you love gadgets and automation, this is the perfect faucet for you.  A smart faucet comes with many bells and whistles, including digital displays that show the water temperature.  It can also fill up a measuring cup at your command.  This faucet is not a DIY install and repairs can be very pricey.

How to Choose a Faucet

Remember that looks aren’t everything. Choose a style that is practical first and foremost.

Pay attention to the height of the spout and the reach.  If you have a three-bowl sink, for example, you will want a spout with a long reach. If it’s too short, it may splash water everywhere.

Choose faucets with ceramic valves.  They offer long-term reliability.  Other types of valves can remain drip-free for years, but ceramic ones are more durable.  Faucets with ceramic valves cost about the same as the others.

Watch the finish.  Chrome is the most durable, good for heavy use,  and easy to clean.  Nickel finishes have a dull shine.  They’re durable, but are prone to fingerprints and water spots.   Bronze faucets have a coating other than metal, and can easily chip or scratch.
