Easy DIY Home Improvement Ideas

DIY Home Improvement Ideas

Simple DIY home improvements can be easy to tackle without breaking the budget. Projects can be done in a day or over a long weekend. A fresh coat of paint, re-staining and changing out the hardware are all budget-friendly ways to freshen up a space. You can also add decor or a new piece of furniture. Below are some DIY home improvement ideas worth trying.

Walls and Backsplash

If you want to spice up a wall, try applying paint with a sponge. It’s actually a lot of fun and you can be very creative. For a more traditional look, freshen up the paint color or change the wallpaper. Stick-and-peel backsplash tile can add some pop to a kitchen. Change the hardware too for a new look.

DIY Furniture Makeovers

Try refurbishing an old piece of furniture, like a nightstand. A find from a thrift store can look good as new! Freshen up a rocking chair, too, with a new coat of paint.  If you like working with your hands, build a table or a desk. Just be sure to find some DIY instructions first.

Shelving and Storage

To tidy up a space, such as the laundry room, add shelving. Bins and baskets are also good for storage. In other rooms, create a shelf out of scrap wood to store plants on or other decor.

Here are some other practical ways to enhance the look of your home.

Update the Fixtures

Over time, switch plates, outlet covers, curtain rods, light fixtures and doorknobs become boring. Add some pizzazz for just a few dollars. Light fixtures and curtain rods may cost a bit more. Think of how you can make an inexpensive product look elegant. A can of spray paint may be all you need.

Install Crown Molding

You can pick up decorative molding strips at the hardware store. Cut them to size and attach them to the top of the wall with a nail gun.  It’s an inexpensive project, but you need a bit of skill and the right tools for the job.

Update Window Treatments

Replace old, cheap, worn-out blinds or shades with new ones. Consider plantation shutters, wooden blinds, or drapes. New window treatments can add value to your home.

Redo the Bathroom Floor

This can be an easy DIY project. Take a class at a local home improvement store and install new tile yourself. This will save money and allow you to splurge on nicer flooring. Consider sprucing up your bathroom cabinets too.

Give Kitchen Cabinets a Facelift

Paint or stain your existing cabinets. It’s a lot cheaper than installing new ones. Remove the hardware from the cabinets and clean them first. Cabinets don’t usually go out of style and are easy for the next homeowner to repaint.

Clean Your Home Exterior

A good pressure washing can bring life back to your home exterior. A fresh coat of paint will also enhance curb appeal. Also, consider power washing the driveway, sidewalks, and patio to perk them up.
